We all know selling your boat can sometimes be a painful exercise but if you follow the LuxMarine guideline of Four Key Steps as detailed below, it just might make things a bit easier to sell your boat online.
CLEAN YOUR BOAT. First things first. If you’ve made the decision to sell your boat then the first thing you should do is clean it. And we are not talking about the quick wash down you usually do after a day on the water. If you want your boat to present well then take the time to put some effort in to cleaning it. Make sure the hull is well washed, the interior is clean and tidy and all covers have been scrubbed are free of mould. Old and broken fittings should be replaced and your motor needs to look fresh and well maintained. For larger vessels, it might even be worthwhile to have your boat detailed by a professional detailer.
TAKE 5 GOOD PHOTOS. Now your boat is clean it’s time to take some good photos as this will be the first visual contact any potential seller has with your boat. It’s important you take the following main shots:
a. Main Photo 1 – side on from the bow showing your boat from side on. Elevated if possible
b. Main Photo 2 – elevated from the stern of the boat showing the motor and looking into the cockpit area
c. Main Photo 3 – detail the motor clearly showing make and model
d. Sub Photo 4 – motor with the cowling off to show condition of the engine
e. Sub Photo 5 – any major accessories like a sounder or maybe the condition of the trailer
DETAILED DESCRIPTION. Don’t go overboard here, but people want to know a bit about your boat and what you’re offering for sale. Make sure you list the make, model and year of manufacture of your boat and motor as well as a details of all things you are selling with the boat. People like to know that if they see a sounder in your photos, then what brand and model it is. Last but not least, tell everyone what overall condition your boat package is. The hull might need work but the motor is only two years old. The more accurate you are here, the more enquiries you will receive.
SET A REALISTIC PRICE. If you’ve made the decision to sell your boat, gone to the effort of cleaning it and taking some quality photos, then the only thing left is to get a sale. So the best way to ensure this happens is to be realistic on your selling price. There’s no point going to all this effort if you’re not prepared to meet the market. On saying that, we know nearly everyone likes to bargain so placing a little bit on top of what you’ll accept is usually a standard practice. But don’t get greedy or you’ll more than likely scare people off and they won’t make that initial enquiry. Remember, you need to find a buyer and by listing a realistic selling price for the goods offered for sale gets you half way there!
So that’s about it. Obviously we can’t guarantee your boat will sell online but by following LuxMarine’s guide of Four key Steps to selling your Boat Online, you’re at least heading in the right direction. |
